The 2021 census of population and housing in Slovakia showed that almost 63% of single-family houses use gas for heating, more than 28% use solid fuels (such as coal, wood, wood pellets and coke) and only about 6% use electric heating. The Slovak Environment Agency was about to launch a new call for 30,000 single-family houses, aiming to support at least 4,000 by the end of 2022. Other eastern European countries are likewise dependent on natural gas, and preferences are shifting from natural gas to other sources of heating. How ready are national support schemes to help people towards more energy efficient living?
